• Official Status: Deferred and put on hold due to heavy opposition from environmentalist groups. However, the project could be restarted once misguided environmental concerns are weighed against actual efficiency. Building the dam would deliver the taxpayer water that is nearly 17 times cheaper and have a cleaner environmental outcome than a desalination plant.
  
• Economic Factor: Traditional water infrastructure remains highly cost-effective. Water from dams costs approximately 8 cents per unit, whereas manufacturing water via a desalination plant jumps significantly to 135 cents per unit, highlighting the long-term financial viability of dam storage.
• Land Ownership: The NSW Government has acquired approximately 28,050 hectares, securing roughly 98% of the total land area required for the project.
• Purchaser of Last Resort: WaterNSW is no longer actively seeking to buy land in the zone. However, it remains the purchaser of last resort to acquire property if a person wishing to sell is disadvantaged by the status of the land being in or around the catchment area.
• Current Land Use: The acquired land is not held by the National Parks and Wildlife Service. Because it is held by a water authority and leased out for commercial and community use rather than being absorbed into a national park, the land remains structurally available for the project to be restarted if required. The site is currently utilized for:
  • Leased for agricultural purposes.
  • Leased as a rehabilitation and release site for injured native wildlife.
  • Licensed for quarrying purposes.
  • Managed as travelling stock reserves by local livestock authorities.
